Juan Martin del Potro to face Novak Djokovic in US Open final after defending champion Rafael Nadal retired from their US Open semi-final.
Third seed Del Juan Martin Potro, the champion in 2009, was 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 ahead when Nadal withdrew from the tournament after suffering a recurrence of the tendinitis that plagued him earlier in the year. Novak Djokovic reached his eighth final at the tournament and 23rd of his Grand Slam career with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 stroll past Japan's Kei Nishikori.
Defending champion Nadal after the match said - “I hate to retire as to stay one more set out there playing like this would have been too much for me. It was very difficult for me to say goodbye before the match finished, but at some point you have to take a decision. That wasn’t a tennis match at the end. It was just one player playing, the other one not moving on the other side of the court.”
