Suzuki Motorcycle India had earlier stated that they are looking to introduce an electric scooter in the Indian market. The company's first electric scooter for India is scheduled to launch sometime in 2020.
Now in an interview with Autocar India, Satoshi Uchida, MD, Suzuki India has confirmed that the upcoming electric scooter will be launched in 2020. He also stated that the e-scooter will also feature a special India-centric design.
Suzuki E-Scooters To Get India-Specific Design; Launch Scheduled For 2020
India is an important market for Suzuki and is also among the few to come with specially designed products. Most famous international products are developed and priced specifically for the Indian market, to help meet the needs and demands of the country.
Suzuki already sells an electric version of the Let's scooter in Japan. However, the e-Let's scooter is hardly an indication of what we can expect from the upcoming EV. The Suzuki e-Let's comes with just 30km of range on a single charge.

Uchida confirmed that the upcoming e-scooter to India will feature performance figures equivalent to either a 110 or 125cc product. Although, their first product will be used to learn and understand customer requirements in the country.

He also mentioned that based on the response from customers, the company can either dial back or improve performance figures. These changes will then be updated on the second generation model.

Suzuki is looking at lithium-ion battery technology for its future in electric mobility. The Suzuki Group is also currently investing highly in a lithium-ion battery plant in India, located in Gujarat.
Although the battery and the motor will be common across all global platforms, Suzuki will, however, will hand over the exterior design to the Suzuki India team. This according to Uchida will help the scooter be customised specifically to meet the Indian requirements.
The company used the same strategy for their other products including the Intruder and the Burgman Street.
Thoughts On The Suzuki e-Scooter For India
Suzuki's electric scooters is still a while away from being introduced in the Indian market. However, one of the main challenges for the company will be its pricing in the country. Suzuki is also in talks with the government for support, in terms of incentives for EV in India.
